Let’s be real, being sick is not cute. The sniffles start, your throat feels scratchy, and suddenly you’re wrapped in three blankets whispering, “Somebody help me, please help me, I’m going down.”
When that moment hits, this is the remedy I reach for.
I found this recipe while traveling back home, wandering through a tiny bookstore. The cover caught my eye, featuring tonic in a glass bottle ready to drink.
When I flipped through, I saw familiar ingredients my family always used for colds: clove, cardamom, basil, and ginger. But this one had a few new surprises too: fennel, ghee, and a crack of black pepper. I thought, Why not?

That first sip changed the game. It’s warm and grounding, but also uplifting. Feels like a hug and a pep talk at the same time. The kind of drink that says, “You’re going to be okay.”
Here’s what you’ll need:
2 cloves,
crack of fresh black pepper,
2 cardamom pods,
¼ tsp fennel seeds,
1 liter of water,
1 tsp grated fresh ginger,
a few basil leaves (holy or regular),
½ tsp ghee or coconut oil,
honey to taste.
You gently roast the spices,
add water and ginger,
then boil and simmer with basil.
Strain, add your ghee and honey, and sip.
When I make this, I always laugh a little at myself, walking around my apartment like I’m 90 years old, hunched over with body pain, coughing, whispering dramatic things like, “Tell my plants I love them.” But by the time I finish a cup, I’m breathing deeper, calmer, softer, and standing straighter.
That’s what I love about it. It’s not just a tea.
It’s my moment to slow down. To stop pushing. To give your body what it’s asking for: warmth, rest, care.
As you sip, maybe ask yourself:
- What is my body really asking for right now, warmth, rest, or stillness?
- How can I care for myself the way I’d care for someone I love?
- What small act of kindness can I give my body today?
Let yourself find joy in the sound of the kettle, in the smell of the spices, in that first slow exhale after the first sip. Healing can be small and beautiful in that way.
If you make this remedy, tag me or share how it turned out. I love seeing your healing rituals come to life. And if you’re still curled up under a blanket right now, that’s okay too. Rest is medicine.
With warmth and honey,
Vee 🍯
